Addressed in holograph on verso. 1 page, 12mo; minor loss to upper right corner repaired with paper, vertical fold, faint scattered soiling, contemporary identification written above address in unknown hand. Vienna, 25 April 1896 [from postmark]
"Möchten Sie auch bei mir vorsprechen? . . ." On his birthday--May 7, 1896--Brahms completed his final important musical work, Vier ernste Gesänge, written after having been shaken by the stroke suffered by Clara Shumann at the end of March in that year. The Biblical text of the work concerns death and renewal. Brahms died in April of the following year.
